We're throwing a comedy show
Last year we took the village to a Braves game. Kids, sunscreen, someone's toddler asleep in a stroller by the fourth inning. It was great.
This year we're doing the opposite. One Saturday night, no kids, five comics, and a room full of people you actually like.
Belly Laughs: A Comedy Night for Family Building is Saturday, October 24 at Red Light Café at Amsterdam Walk. Doors at 7:30, show at 8, out by 9:30. Tickets are $50 and there's a bar tab waiting for you when you walk in. 21+.
Why a comedy show
Because you've been to the Soirée.
February is the night we get dressed up, make the case, and ask you for real money. It works, and it isn't going anywhere. But one night a year doesn't make a community.
So this is the other one. Fifty dollars, a Saturday, no agenda beyond getting the village in a room together.
To be clear about what you're walking into… these are working Atlanta comics doing their actual sets. It isn't a surrogacy show. Nobody is going to make you cry unless it’s from lauching too hard. You're going to laugh at marriage and parenting and the South for ninety minutes, and then you're going to go home.
The lineup
Emily Holden hosts. Emily is an Atlanta stand-up who tours nationally with Moms Unhinged and produces the monthly show Banjo Lounge. She works Laughing Skull, Helium, The Punchline and Alley Stage, and her material lives in the genuinely frightening territory of marriage and motherhood. She is the right person to run this room.
Amanda Marks turns the mundane into something monumentally funny. She co-hosts the award-winning Sis & Tell podcast, tours with Moms Unhinged, and has featured for Elayne Boosler, Jessica Kirson and Judy Gold. She describes her own comedy as unquestionably Southern and Jewish, which is accurate.
Damon Sumner brings high-energy storytelling about his upbringing and everyday life. You've likely seen him on DryBar, Apple TV, Amazon Prime or Don't Tell Comedy. Two albums on SiriusXM, headline sets on Norwegian and Carnival, and a semi-final finish in the American Black Film Festival's Comedy Wings Competition.
Nathan Owens has taken his particular brand of awkward funny across the US, Ireland and the UK. Born in West Virginia, raised in Georgia. His debut album is Name Brand Human and his latest is Possum Daddy.
Tut Said is one of ours. At 45, Tut chose single fatherhood and built his family of two through surrogacy — he shared that story with us back in March. He's also a comic. Those two facts have nothing to do with each other, which is sort of the point.
What your ticket does
Fifty dollars buys you a seat, a drink to start, and ninety minutes of stand-up. It also goes to The Surrogacy Foundation. Less of a fundraiser, more of a way to connect with others in Atlanta who support family building through us.
Come, and bring someone
This one is easy to say yes to. It's a Saturday, it's ninety minutes, and you'll be home by ten.
If you know someone who loves comedy, bring them.
